Ideas and projects for more liberal societies and communities

Here we provide a very brief overview of where to find information about anti-etatist theories and ideas, those who develop and promote theories and ideas of this kind, and community-building projects that attempt to put some of these ideas into practice. Our concept of creating and developing a community for supporters of liberal (in the original meaning of this word) views in today's realities is briefly described in separate articles on the site.

If we talk about the theoretical understanding of the problem of creating a better system of public self-government, then it has a rather long history. We and our like-minded people are, of course, more interested in theories that justify liberal models of social structure. Among the think tanks and organizations that systematically develop and promote this line of thought, the most authoritative is the Mises Institute, based in the United States. In particular, their website contains the most comprehensive selection of relevant literature, starting with the works of the classics of liberal thought: mises.org

As for the practical implementation of such ideas and theories, until recently their supporters had little to boast about. However, there was a rather sensational breakthrough in this matter recently. Argentina elected libertarian Javier Milei as president. It appears that the Argentine people are tired of living for many years in conditions of almost continuous crisis due to the chronic inability of the socialists in power to establish normal life. People realized that they had nothing to lose and decided to take a risk. Despite the difficulties that Milei honestly warned voters about, the first positive results of the reforms are already noticeable. Supporters of liberalization all over the world have taken heart and are following with excitement and hope the fate of this attempt to pull a fairly large country out of the socialist-bureaucratic swamp.

There are some projects to create local communities based on libertarian principles, which, however, have failed to attract a very large number of participants. Currently, the following two projects are showing signs of activity.

In 2001 in New Hampshire, USA, a group of libertarians founded the
Free State Project. The project continues to exist today, and a non-profit organization has been created on the basis of this movement. This organization has a not very active social media campaign (it has several tens of thousands of subscribers on each of its main pages) and holds routine events every year. The movement's organizers sought to get enough libertarians to move to the state to have the power to influence changes in its laws. At present, several thousand supporters of the idea are known to have moved there. This is clearly not enough to implement the desired reforms, given that they are unpopular among the state's old-timers.

In 2020, a group of Russian immigrants founded the Free State Europe Project in Montenegro, also known as Montelibero. Currently, several hundred people are participating in the project in various formats. However, this project differs favourably from the above-mentioned one by providing fairly detailed and structured information, also available in English (you can choose this language on the website): montelibero.org

From time to time, attempts are also made to create island and floating microstates, which have not yet been crowned with any noticeable success.

Our concept, which unites different but related projects, differs from the above-mentioned ones in that it involves solutions to typical human problems within the framework of existing jurisdictions and other realities of today. The idea of developing a community based on the ideology of liberalism and cooperation is not an end in itself and should be realized in the process of achieving rather utilitarian goals, by choosing directions and methods of practical activity, as well as attracting like-minded people to to jointly solve these problems. The people for whom our concept is intended are not necessarily active supporters of libertarianism. However, they are people inclined to independent creative activity and cooperation, whose culture and mentality make them receptive to the ideas of a liberal society.
